The Death of Traditional REST APIs: Why We Are Standardizing on tRPC & gRPC

Why REST APIs fail to maintain type safety and why we utilize tRPC and gRPC.

REST APIs are inherently loose. Swagger specs and JSON schemas drift away from actual runtime responses as codebases grow. Developers waste hours debugging undefined properties. To solve this, we standardized our stack around tRPC for internal web communication, and gRPC for microservice serialization.

1. Establishing End-to-End Type Safety with tRPC

tRPC allows us to share TypeScript types directly between our frontend and backend components without code generation steps. When a database schema changes, type errors are instantly caught at the frontend client level during compilation. This prevents runtime crashes due to mismatched API payloads.

2. High-Performance Serialization with gRPC

For microservice-to-microservice communication, JSON parsing is too heavy. We migrated internal calls to gRPC using Protocol Buffers. In our performance benchmarks, Protocol Buffer binary serialization reduced network payload sizes by 40% and improved database routing response times by 3x compared to JSON over REST.
